Academicians and Technology

To deliver something efficiently, we need multiple tools to enhance the process of delivery.

One of my classmates masa tu jumpa buku tu di library dan pinjam bawa masuk kelas. But that lecturer tetap suruh my friend salin sebab katanya nanti senang ingat.

Slowly things changed. From using transparency projector we started to use LCD projector yang disambung ke PC menggunakan cable VGA. Yang takde still keep on using transparency.

But slowly kawan-kawan yang takde tu mula beli notebook bila tengok kawan-kawan yang ada ni senang-senang edit nota atas power point. During this time, assignment yang dihantar guna CD merupakan something yang premium. Silap-silap pencipta dia pun belum akil baligh lagi.

Then, our faculty decided to fix a permanent LCD projector in each class together with a PC unit. Masa tu monitor VGA kotak. So senang la sikit kerja kami, tak perlu bawa notebook. Dah la zaman tu notebook besar dan berat.

Masa ni dah mula ramai kawan-kawan sekerja kami guna thumbdrive sebab nak bawa nota dan cucuk di PC. Zaman ni pun student-student dah guna thumbdrive sendiri. Ada yang dah mula ada external hardisk. Few years than, LCD dah tak guna. We have our own LED TV dalam classroom. Still being connected to the PC using VGA, we now have the option to connect it using HDMI. Some of us even uses the USB cable to connect straight to thumbdrive.

Now, most of our classes have internet connection, which is kinda luxurious 5 years back as only computer labs have this service. Nasib baik bilik kami semua memang ada internet. And now, the speed has gone up steadily. Maybe at the student's college still ada issues as there are lot's of user streaming something. But in my room, it is enough. Most students sekarang pun dah ada mobile internet.

We, academicians are now actively engage with students via the internet. Be it through social media or a more formal type of communication such as forum platform provided by the university, semuanya berfungsi sebagai pemudahcara dalam menjayakan objektif akademik.

Academicians and students are now much more close as they can view each other social media. Academicians update their daily lives and viewed by students and vice versa. Ada pro and cons.

Student life zaman sekarang ada sedikit perbezaan dengan zaman academicians punya student life. In order to understand them better, one need to analyze their social needs. This can be obtain through observing their social media. Bila kita faham mereka, maka mudahlah kita mendidik mereka.

For me, mutual understanding can lead to a greater achievement. Does the latest IR 4.0 can replace us the lecturers and academicians? Ask yourself if you like to learn something from a robot. This can be another post by me so stay tune.

First October Down

Hari-hari hujan.

When I did my Masters di UK, saya dapat lihat people over there amat appreciate mendapat sunshine. With sunshine comes along the clear blue sky with some white clouds above. Especially musim Winter, apabila tiba-tiba ada sunshine, ramai yang keluar to enjoy the sight.

Just imagine duduk dalam keadaan mendung dari pagi hingga petang. No motivation untuk bekerja atau kekal aktif. Rasa nak tidur je. Saya memang agak lemah kalau cuaca sebegini. Idea pun tiada untuk berinovasi. Memang sang suria memainkan peranan dalam kehidupan saya. I am more motivated when I woke up to see a bright sunny morning.

I was in Madinah in February and witnessed the cold weather but yang syoknya, matahari pun terik with clear blue sky. They finally witnessed it in Madinah. Cuma sana tak sesejuk UK. UK it was below 10, while at Madinah at that time was below 15 minus the wind. Kalau datang angin kuat, memang lagi sejuk.

Now it's October. The first day of October I was down with diarrhoea. My daughter was struck with it on Saturday. Sekali dengan muntah. Than, my son pula kena on Sunday midnight. Monday afternoon, my wife was down with the same symptom. So, pada petang Isnin 30 September saya berdebar-debar tunggu giliran. Even masuk kelas pun bawak plastik, takut termuntah masa dalam kelas.

Luckily sampai petang pun selamat. No symptoms. Tapi perut sebenarnya dah rasa semacam. Malam tu badminton session at Yoshin, I decided to proceed. Sampai di Yoshin, spec pula patah. Terpaksa minta tolong kawan saya si Bulat drive my car balik rumah to take another spec. Saya tak berani nak drive sebab dalam keadaan hujan, takut terlanggar motosikal yang tak berlampu.

Badminton session berjalan seperti biasa. Melompat sana sini. After that session, saya minum jus buah dalam tin berjenama Celsius. Tak pernah saya lihat air ini so I decided to try. Based on their website at https://www.celsius.com/, ia rupanya produk US. Kalau ikut penerangan yang diberikan, that drink increases metabolism. And of course, 0 sugar. Saya beli sebab calorie rendah, much lower than 100 plus active which is 50kcal per intake. Celsius cuma 20kcal.

Balik rumah, masa nak tidur pun dah standby letak baldi di sebelah tilam just in case malam-malam termuntah. But nothing happened. Tapi perut pagi tu dah rasa ada some sort of activity. Macam ada alien.

Then it came. Pagi tu instead of heading to my workplace, i was heading to my toilet. 3-4 kali sampai saya tired. Try minum tapi tiada selera. So I went to the nearest clinic. My BP was high. I was given plenty of medication which I quickly consume. I was also given an MC.

Today, everything's better. Managed to recover quite quickly. Tiada muntah. Cuma petang Selasa tu rasa macam nak demam with lotsa body aches. Telan panadol sebijik. Malam dah okay.

That was my first awesome October opening. Hopefully something awful at the start turns to something beautiful at the end.

Life After The Viva

Hampir terlupa kewujudan nizamyunus.com sehinggalah rakan sekerja bertanya pada saya, 'Bro, How's life after Viva?'

So I would like to share it to all of you. Firstly, I did not take long to rest after the Viva. I was given 6 months maximum for correction, which means that it had to be done completely including submitting hardcover bound thesis within 6 months, which in my case, will end in February 2020. But for me to attend the convocation in April 2020, which happened to be my birthday month, I need to submit my thesis much earlier.

My Viva Day was on a hazeless Thursday and I started to work on my correction the following Monday. As I post this entry, I am proud to say that I had finished my correction given by my examiners especially my international examiners who told me to look into the digitization aspect of preserving records.

I just need to do some typo correction and few technical glitches. Am I free now? Not to say No but also not a big Yes. Still got lotsa work to do but on the PhD part, yeah I am nearing the finishing line.

So this is my life after Viva, still busy with work, need to settle the final examination matters and also class. And I am writing this as I listen to the song 'Send Me An Angel' by Scorpions while enjoying the almost clear blue sky again since the HAZE attack.

Impak Media Sosial

Tidak dinafikan bahawa media sosial mempunyai pro's and con's tersendiri. Pernah juga mempunyai Bigo tapi in the end saya uninstall sebab tak nampak kepentingannya.

No mobile internet yet for them.

Twitter saya lebih banyak guna untuk melihat current news or situation. Saya follow twitter news agency or their journalist. It's much more faster to receive the latest news from twitter rather than online portal. And for sure, I receive a much faster traffic update selain dari Waze.

Facebook merupakan social platform rakan-rakan seumur saya. Using FB, I managed to find lotsa old friends. Saya juga berhubung dengan my ex students through FB. Some overseas friends when I was studying at Leicester pun ada dalam FB friendlist saya. Always manage to follow their life journey. At least I know they are happy enjoying life.

But ada juga yang saya kureng sikit pasal all 3 ni. Insta saya tak suka sebab kadang-kadang gambar manusia dalam tu fake and berpura-pura untuk tarik likes and followers. Twitter pula agak merbahaya kalau kita terlalu 100% percaya content di dalamnya. Especially kalau melibatkan personal account. Kalau news agency masih boleh dipercayai. Kadang-kadang some twitter user ni suka create cerita sendiri yang tak betul hujung pangkal. And to some, once keluar di Twitter, it's always true.

FB pula annoying kalau asyik tengok status orang berunsur negatif atau marah-marah orang. Some suka cerita buruk baik pasangan dalam FB. Ironinya user-user yang ada dalam friend list saya yang jenis macam ni, in real life semua nampak baik, sopan dan lemah lembut. Tapi dalam FB perangai mengalahkan watak antagonis paling dibenci dalam drama melayu.

As been penned earlier, social media has its own pro and cons. It is advisable to see more of the pros rather than cons. But when the cons are much bigger than the pros, than we need a good set of skills to navigate through the cons until we reach the pros. Without this skills, one can easily get lost in the thick forest of cons.

Pengalaman Viva PhD

Seperti yang saya ceritakan di entri sebelum ini di sini, saya akan coretkan some of my experience regarding my PhD viva. Ada yang kata this is the examination of our PhD. Ada juga yang kata this is the final showcase of the PhD. To tell you the truth, honestly there's no right or wrong about the statement. But for me, every single thing in my PhD is the exam it self. Every single process. I remember one of my senior member of the faculty told me once, PhD is about going through all the process.

Okay, back to the experience. Pengalaman menghabiskan penulisan tesis dan runnning it dalam turnitin for plagiarism check pun actually is the starting point of my Viva experience. Bermula seawal almost 6 months before my actual Viva date. Then the process of my supervisor selecting examiner. One external examiner from outside Malaysia, one external examiner from inside Malaysia and one internal examiner within the Faculty itself.

When I finally submit my thesis, it's time to update a bit my readings regarding topic PhD saya as there may be some current development which the answer is always a YES. If you ask me whether you should do this or not, I will say a big yes. Basically because as the PhD topic is our interest, so kita kena la selalu membaca topic of interest kita tu. Lagipun knowledge selalu berkembang. It does not mean that we must read something academic. Current news regarding our PhD topic pun dah cukup bagus.

Then, I was told by the Postgraduate department staff about my Viva date. Actually I was expecting an earlier date but due to some unforseen circumstances, expected date tu tak dapat dilangsungkan. Because you must remember that in setting up the date, the availability of various person involved must be considered. Those person are the chairman (must be a Prof or Assoc Prof, preferably a Prof), at least two examiners (both external and internal) and our supervisor.

Masa dapat date, saya dah book the week before untuk ke holiday. Almost one whole week. Memang saya ada bawa things untuk di buat berkenaan Viva ni but as my wife told me, you will never have any time to do. The kids memang perah tenaga saya betul-betul bila holiday ni. From dusk till dawn diorang beraktiviti.

A day before Viva.
This is very crucial as I need to remain calm. Tak mau panic attack or anxiety. Surprisingly I did not have any of these padahal my Viva preparation biasa biasa je. So many things to cover and I do not have the ability to do it all. Another things is as my PhD is longer than the usual time frame (senang cerita, not graduating on time), so banyak juga perkara saya kena refresh memory.

Luckily for me, bila saya selongkar my computer data, so many things saya dah simplify in one or two pages every year. It seems like my strategy to prepare for Viva from the very beginning of my PhD paid off. Just need to selongkar back my computer data.

So for my readers yang belum or tengah buat PhD, make sure every single thing you do, you document it in a MSWord file so that when it finally comes to Viva, you can retrieve and use it back. Kinda diary. Kalau buat on time okay lagi sebab masih belum lupa, tapi kalau dah terkeluar dari standard time frame, better buat macam saya suggest sebab nanti lupa.

A day before Viva, my parents call wishing me luck. That weekend saya balik kampung jumpa diorang. Ayah suruh baca Rabbi Yassir berulang kali supaya dipermudahkan. The night before my morning Viva, saya di ofis dan terjumpa pula rakan-rakan. Dan mereka terkejut bila saya kata esok pagi saya Viva. Diorang tanya tak balik rumah ke prepare or tidor or nervous ke apa. Saya jawab tak, so far dah siap semua yang termampu. So there's not much I can do more. Baik tenang-tenang. Lagipun Tenang is Good. And I did not update anything on SocMed because I am really calm. Selalu yang update dalam socmed tenang is good beserta gambar dia lepak somewhere tu sebenarnya dia tengah tak tenang tapi cuba berpura-pura tenang. Kita kalau tengah tenang tak perlu nak upload kat SocMed. Very funny this guy.

Viva Day
I woke up as usual, kejutkan anak perempuan saya suruh bangun pergi sekolah. Masa tengah kejut tu saya suruh dia doakan saya sekali supaya saya tenang dalam Viva. Saya tak sebut Viva, saya sebut 'Kakak doakan Daddy ye, Daddy exam PhD pagi ni'. Nanti sebut Viva dia tak faham pulak.

Nak ke ofis, wife wishes me Good Luck, and there I was off with my motorbike to my faculty where my Viva will be held. Sampai ofis at 0745hrs. Dokumen-dokumen telah saya prepare a day before and telah saya check for errors. Sampai ofis, do all the necessary things, doa pada Allah and berjalan slowly to the place where my Viva will take place.

Rupanya my Viva starts at 1000hrs. I am here now at 0815hrs. Too early. So to cut it short, ada minum-minum dan jamuan ringan pada jam 0945hrs. Everything for me was calm and usual. So at around 1015 hrs (lepas ambil gambar), the Chairman for today's session which is Prof Adnan began the session. After introducing me with all the people inside, including my Dep Dean Academic Affairs who was present as an observer, all of us need to go out except the minute taker, chairman and examiners.

Then we were allowed to go back inside again. I started the presentation. The maximum limit is 25 minutes. When I was doing my rehearsal, it was all over in just 10 minutes. But during the real Viva, I still had 3 more slides to explain even after the 25 minutes bell rang. Luckily the chairman allowed me to proceed at faster pace. One of the examiners told me that I presented like a politician. Tiba-tiba masa present tu, semangat naik.

Then came the Q&A, Alhamdulillah managed to answer all the questions and most are suggestions. Tak banyak sangat kena betulkan. My external examiner from Turkey wrote in his report that I need to put some things which I actually had but I put it in the wrong section. Most of my corrections are like that.

In the end, the result was conveyed to me by the Chairman during the Viva at 1130 hrs, 1127 hrs to be exact. And I called my wife and my dad to convey the good news.

Post Viva
At 1220 hrs saya collect every single thing from the Postgraduate Office such as my letter of result, copies of my thesis returned by my examiners (for easier reference in correction), then terus rasa lapar. So me and both my supervisors were off to Mozers to celebrate and discuss further on my Viva and corrections. Lepas makan, balik ofis to finalize some things. Balik rumah awal hari ni sebab suddenly felt very tired. After years of this PhD thing, hampir half of it or 3/4 or beban dah hilang. Balik rumah terus tidur.

So, what I've learnt and wish to share with you all is, Viva ni tempat kita cerita apa kita dah buat masa PhD, pengalaman kita ketika PhD. During my session, examiners tanya tentang kenapa pilih method kajian, no wrong or right answer. Yang penting kita justify. Macam saya, saya justify kenapa saya pilih method sekian sekian sebab the research topic is sensitive in nature and would like to explore more on the research problem.

Which is something that is good sebab sepanjang buat PhD ni, hanya saya dan supervisor yang dok baca dan faham. Dengan adanya examiner baca tesis kita, we can have a different view on other reader's perspective.

So now, I need to do my correction. Hope to finish my correction A.S.A.P

Viva Done Alhamdulillah

Just a short note to mention that I have done my PhD Viva Voce and pass with minor correction. Mostly sebab saya careless and did not explicitly mention things. My Viva was on Thursday, 22nd August 2019. It started at around 1015 and the result was delivered at 1130 hrs. According to my friend, it was kinda quick for a PhD Viva. Saya tak tau sebab this is my first ever Viva.

Will tell my Viva story in the next entry.

Viva Around The Corner

Hi All, currently busy preparing power point slides for my Viva presentation. This is where I will present my PhD thesis.

So sekarang tengah busy siapkan power point, banyak sangat nak di cover sampai tak tahu mana nak mula dahulu.

Bila melihat muka anak-anak ketika mereka tidur, sayu pula rasanya. So I decided to carry on my vacation.

Alhamdulillah balik vacation terasa lapang sedikit. Moga-moga ada sinar di sebalik pengorbanan ini. Will post again after finishing my Viva. Still have correction and formatting to do after the Viva. Good Luck to me.
